Skylanders. What is so great about them?

Gamers. You might have seen these strange new action figures popping up everywhere in the gaming section of say your local GameStop, Wal-Mart, Target, Toys’R’us, etc.

But what is Skylanders actually?

So, I decided to check them out.

Skylanders is a game for the PlayStation 3, Wii, 3DS, and Xbox 360. It comes with a game, a portal, and three action figures.

But what is so special about the game that little kids and even some hardcore gamers go crazy for it?

It’s the action figures and that niffy little thing called the ‘portal’.

The portal is the main hardware and is necessary to play the Skylanders game. The portal allows you to use the action figures that came with the game to come to life in the game. The more your progress through the game, you need certain action figures to open new areas or beat certain areas with ease. That’s where most of the money is going for the game, is in it’s action figures. The more you collect, the more of a chance of you beating the game and opening all the areas that are available.

Still a little lost? Here let me break it down.

The action figures are characters that can be placed on the portal to ‘drop down’ into the game. The gamer will use that newly generated character to fight enemies and open new areas in the game. When you look at the action figure itself you will notice the character and a base it’s standing on. For example,   there is a character called Whirlwind. He is a dragon and his speciality is air. So if you look at the base that he is standing on. You will notice clouds and it will be the same for any Skylander that uses the air element. If you flip the figure to it’s bottom, you will notice a symbol down there too. It tells you that it’s an air element character.

All those Skylanders that you have to collect and find.

So you can see why many kids what to go out and spend 10-30 dollars on Skylanders till they get them all. Also, there are golden Skylanders that are rare to find and are more expensive to get a hold of. [Best way to explain Skylanders to adults… Pick a trading card game that they may recognize (most of the time it’s Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh!), then tell them that they can put that trading card into a video game, and the more cards your collect the faster you’ll be completing the game.)
Now, there is a new game using the same Skylanders concept just with BIGGER Skylanders. Called Skylanders Giants. Using the same portal and Skylander figures that you used in the first game and puts them in a whole new game with even more new Skylanders to collect. [Total money maker right there. I will I could make a game like that… Totally would be rolling in some dough.]
Didn’t I tell you there were more to collect.
I probably might get back into my Skylanders game one more time just to finish it and then get the Giants to see what all the hype is again. Probably it’s going to be the same as when Skylanders came out the first time.
